St. Cyril’s debut album, Hurt People Hurt People, is a bold and unflinching exploration of the five stages of grief, but it’s not just a journey into pain—it's a call to action. Rooted in deeply personal experiences and observations of those around them, the album’s central theme is clear: if past wounds remain unhealed, they inevitably manifest as new ones. The band believes that grief, no matter how overwhelming, must be processed fully, for it is inextricably tied to the depth of one’s love and care. Yet, as they point out, society often resists this process, favoring distraction over healing.
“Grieving is proportional to how much we care,” St. Cyril explains. “But today, so many of us avoid taking real steps to work through it. Beyond intellectualizing these ideas, there’s a need to take responsibility for our lives and become better individuals.” Tracks like “My Therapist Says...” epitomize St. Cyril’s ability to balance emotional depth with satirical lyricism. The song’s tongue-in-cheek approach sheds light on the troubling trend of individuals weaponizing therapy, using the act of seeking help as a façade while avoiding the work of real self-improvement. “We wanted to hold up a mirror,” they share. “The ridiculousness of the character’s actions makes the song humorous, but the underlying consequences are serious. It’s rooted in real experiences and observations, which is why it resonates with listeners.”
Another standout track, “I’m a Victim of a Lie,” delves into the dangerous tendency to weaponize misfortune as a means of deflecting accountability. The song was inspired by a personal experience where someone weaponized a therapist’s advice to justify their actions. St. Cyril remarks, “This behavior sets a harmful precedent. It discourages people from being decision-makers in their own lives. Victimhood becomes a shield, but it also becomes a cage.”
Musically, Hurt People Hurt People fuses the spirit of iconic rock influences with a modern sensibility. The band’s sound pays homage to their inspirations without losing its distinct identity. “It’s easy to fall into the trap of sounding like someone else,” they say. “But we’ve spent years developing our voice. The noise in today’s music scene is loud, but we try to stay true to what we need to say—and how we want to say it.” While the album confronts heavy themes, it is ultimately empowering. St. Cyril hopes their listeners come away with a renewed sense of agency and a willingness to address their own emotional struggles. “The world can wait,” they affirm. “The hard work of looking within and breaking cycles of hurt begins with us.”
With Hurt People Hurt People, St. Cyril has crafted more than an album—it’s a testament to resilience, introspection, and the transformative power of music.
