Capturing daydreams in ethereal harmonies, Shashwat Bulusu's latest single "Sau Dafa" forges remembrances of a sweet illustration fragmented deep in our psyche. Started the year by going off independently followed by giving a powerful performance at Lollapalooza, it's evident that Shashwat is going to disrupt this year. Started as a vague recollection, Sau Dafa was an enumerated effort of endless writing and composition. Often struggling with inspiration and morale, the daily habit of writing provoked the birth of a soothing crusade everyone relates to. When asked to explain the sound of his creation, Shashwat replied "In terms of the sound and feeling that I was chasing, was that of a midnight lounge for heartbreaks. Sau Dafa is that it is someone lounging through their broken and mundane yet manageable life."

When asked more about the theme of the song and the message behind it, Shashwat explained it as a separation of a common man from the regime. Personifying the dishonest government, Shashwat perfectly disguises his dissatisfaction by portraying this as a "break-up" song, blending the statement When man fails you into melancholy melodies.

"I feel we at all stages across all political parties have developed a certain amount of disdain and lack of trust with the people in power be it the municipality or the government. It’s more a song about this feeling of accepting things as they are than a song about the system." says Bulusu

Other than the need for expression, when asked what the one thing that benefited him in formulating this new sound was, his reply was a few microphones!! "2 years ago, I bought a couple of soviet era microphones from a radio collector in Bangalore and I wanted an opportunity to try them out. I ended up writing an EP with the sounds of those mics and the era in my mind. Once the EP was done, all I wanted to do was write more and I revisited the idea for Sau Dafa and somehow my muscle to write was fit enough to write and produce the song. It was these mics that directed the sound." Well delighted with this vigour, Shashwat devoted this new sound to being lucid and having a constant stream of consciousness. With so many years of experience in comprehending more about music and the path of sound, Shashwat has enriched his skills and is finally ready to integrate his knowledge and abilities to produce something that resonates with his music and heart.

While questioning his visualization of performing the song live, he stands a little hesitant at first. But this hesitancy slowly unravels into his beliefs of how his art should be perceived. He believes the song is cinematic and hysterical to be reflected in his live gigs. An artist attains absolute pleasure when their message is recognized by the people and the greatest contentment Shashwat can reckon is people appreciating in such a manner that they adopt the song as their own, especially sad people in the night.

"I think people often see me as a textbook singer/songwriter, which I am not. My new sound is different from whatever I’ve done in the past.” says Shaswat. Sau Dafa is the song with which he’s trying to tell people that he can do a lot more and I can create different sounds and want to shed the image from a singer/songwriter to that of an artist. Shashwat wants to produce, create visuals, and write as well and all of this cannot be distilled into one tag.

With this devotion and vitality, Shashwat reaffirms to the fans that he has still more art to offer to the world and Sau Dafa is just the beginning. After being released as a signed artist, there was a lot of contemplation about moving ahead. Even the biggest concern faced while creating Sau Dafa was qualifying whether the song was worth releasing or not. But all the dust resolved in the past, he has now embarked on his path. It seems like he is ready to conquer the year. When asked about his future blueprints, Shashwat replied "Sau Dafa is the start of a year-long calendar of releases including my debut EP Fitrat. I want people to know that and tag along for this new journey which almost feels like a debut."

Well, whatever the future holds for us, we don't think there's any stoppage to him now. Sau Dafa was the first step that solidified his new path to venture on a journey of self-expression and we cannot see whatever he has to offer. Till then we can just sit tight and anticipate the offerings Shashwat has prepared for us.
