Over the past four to five years, the Indian hip-hop scene has undergone a rapid transformation, witnessing an explosion of tracks flooding the airwaves and online platforms on a daily basis. Yet, amidst this deluge of new voices and beats, a discernible trend has emerged—a certain homogeneity in sound, style, and lyrical content. Many emerging artists seem to tread familiar ground, repeating themes and tropes that lack personal resonance, making it challenging for them to make genuine connections with their audience or carve out a distinct identity in the industry.
However, amidst this sea of similarity, 2023 made the arrival of a trio of young talents hailing from Delhi who breathed new life into the genre. Last year, a few of my friends introduced me to these three incredibly talented boys hailing from Delhi, urging me to give their music a listen. Initially, I confess, I was a bit sceptical about delving into what they termed as "new school" music. However, despite my reservations, my friends persisted, and I eventually acquiesced. Little did I know, I was about to witness music unlike any other. What sets these artists apart is their refusal to conform to the prevailing trends, instead opting to inject their music with a rawness and grit that is undeniably authentic with each track pouring an unmistakable energy, fuelled by commitment to speak their truth, unfiltered and unadulterated. Their lyrics cut through the noise, offering a commentary on the harsh realities of urban life, resonating deeply with listeners who crave substance amidst the superficiality of the mainstream scene.
And if my own testimony isn't convincing enough, one needs only to heed the words of Indian Hip Hop legends, "Seedhe Maut," who have themselves lauded the genius of Og Lucifer, Lil Bhavi, and Bhaskar in their interviews. Trust, when it comes to the seal of approval from such luminaries, there's undoubtedly substance behind the hype.

Meet the Boys Making Waves
In their journey through the layers of the hip-hop world, Og Lucifer, Bhaskar, and Lil Bhavi each found their own unique paths converging into a shared love of hip hop. At the genesis of it all stood Og Lucifer, someone who was entrenched in the ethos of hip-hop, his roots entwined with breaking and the lyrical prowess of icons like 50 Cent. It was he who first unfurled hip-hop culture before the others, drawing them into its intricate world of beats and rhymes. Bhaskar was always drawn to music but it was more of the pop persuasion back then but later on he slowly moved on to hip-hop. Whenever AB17, OG Lucifer, and Bhavi got together to hang out, it wasn't just about chilling, it was a full-on creative experience. They'd spend hours sharing music from different artists, jotting down new rap verses, and taking turns reading them aloud. It was like a mini rap workshop every time they met, where they'd encourage each other to improve and grow. This supportive atmosphere wasn't just about personal growth, it was about lifting each other up and becoming better rappers as a team.
As for Lil Bhavi, his journey into the world of rap was a more gradual affair, one that unfolded alongside his cousin Bhaskar. "I'll admit, I was a bit late to the party, but once Bhaskar and Lucifer started making music together, I couldn't help but feel the pull of hip-hop. It was like a fire ignited within me, urging me to find my voice and join them on this incredible journey."
What Shapes Their Sound?
When discussing their musical influences and unique sound, OG Lucifer, Bhavi, and Bhaskar reflected on the evolution of their tastes over time. Drawing inspiration from artists like Young Thug and Lil Durk, known for their raw authenticity, they found themselves gravitating towards music that mirrored their own journey—unfiltered, genuine, and unapologetically real. Describing their sound to the Indian audience, they emphasized the importance of perspective. They acknowledged that while New School music might still be a nascent concept for many, there's a growing understanding among listeners. Within the industry, however, they asserted that their sound is recognized and respected. It's a sound that defies convention, characterized by its unfiltered expression and unabashed honesty.
"In simple terms," they explained, "our music is about unfiltered talks—no frills, no facades, just raw and real." It's this commitment to authenticity that sets their sound apart and resonates with audiences both within and beyond the confines of the Indian music scene.
Setting the Record Straight on Group Dynamics
One major misconception that requires clarification about Og Lucifer, Bhaskar, and Bhavi is the notion that they constitute a trio akin to Migos or a collective. Contrary to this belief, they emphasize that while they collaborate closely and hail from the same area as close friends and homies, they are, in fact, individual artists. They're currently on tour with 'Seedhe Maut,' who are like a family for them and have consistently offered unwavering support. The response they've been receiving from this tour is nothing short of phenomenal. While they've always been creating quality music, the feedback garnered from this tour holds significant meaning for them.
In divulging their forthcoming plans and endeavours, they expressed their genuine admiration and appreciation for Encore and Calm, the dynamic duo comprising Seedhe Maut. "Seedhe Maut has consistently served as our backbone, offering unwavering support throughout our journey," they acknowledged with gratitude. "We're thrilled to be associated with their upcoming projects and their new label DL91," they continued, excitement palpable in their voices. "Collaborating with them has always been a rewarding experience, and we can't wait to share with the world what we've been cooking up together."
Birthing 'Section 71'
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, Bhaskar found himself juggling a full-time job while nurturing his passion for music on the side. Despite the demands of his schedule, he made it a point to carve out time for studio visits, usually once a week. Over the course of a single night, Bhaskar's creative fervor surged, resulting in the birth of seven songs, all infused with the infectious energy of TNT beats. These beats played a pivotal role in the formation of Section 71, comprising 13 out of 17 tracks. With OG Lucifer, Bhavi, and Bhaskar all contributing their talents and energy, the vision for a collaborative album begun—a project that would ultimately redefine the landscape of Indian hip-hop. Guiding the artistic endeavors was Prince Sabana, whose adept management of OG Lucifer, Lil Bhavi, and Bhaskar proved instrumental in shaping the album's trajectory. Prince Sabana's influence extended beyond mere managerial and creative duties, his close friendship with "Seedhe Maut" facilitated crucial connections and collaborations, vitalizing the Section 71 project. Through his networks and unwavering support, Prince Sabana helped proliferate the album's reach, ensuring its resonance and impact in every conceivable avenue. Thus, the groundbreaking album 'Section 71' was born, a testament to their collective creativity, dedication, and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries. And with its release, the scene was forever changed, paving the way for a new era of innovation and authenticity in Indian music.
Keeping It Real
"We're honestly not that hyped about upcoming collaborations, drops, or projects," we confess. "Bhaskar's got about 200 tracks locked and loaded, Bhavi's sitting on around 82 songs, and Og Lucifer just wrapped up his album. So, it's not like we're waiting on the edge of our seats for anything specific. For us, the main focus is always on making music. But if there's one thing that does get us excited," we admit with a spark of enthusiasm, "it's the prospect of international collaborations. That's where our eyes light up and our creative juices really start flowing."
